Flashpoint for Nov. 7, 2005

It's hard to be a deficit hawk and a pork king at the same time. Sen. John Ensign is discovering how hard it is to be two animals in one as he tries to save his own bacon and cut the budget. Last week he was insisting no Nevada projects were in jeopardy as he and his colleagues tried to cut money and help Katrina victims. But that pig wasn't going to fly. So Ensign now says it would be hypocritical to call for all this belt-tightening without ensuring his waistline remained trim, too. And I don't mean playing some hoops in the congressional gym. So Ensign says $46 million in road projects in the valley should be excised during this time of need. And so the pig in him is grounded while the hawk soars.
