Turning the tide against the dark side
Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005 | 8:27 a.m.
In your Nov. 1 editorial, "Bush hands out Halloween treat," you stated that President Bush was "genuflecting to the religious and social conservatives" and was "cowed into doing the bidding of extremist elements within the Republican Party." Both statements incorrectly cast his actions in a negative light.
America elected President Bush twice! America has elected conservative presidents to serve 17 of the last 25 years and Republicans have controlled one or both houses of Congress most of that time.
It is time the conservative mainstream had a Supreme Court majority that will interpret the Constitution as written rather than making it up as they go along. Bush is doing what the mainstream majority of conservative Americans elected him to do. If this is not a great example of democracy at work, I will need to go back to college and refresh my democrat/liberal indoctrination.
American society is divided; it is commonly called the culture war. Nearly half of America believes it is proper for a 14-year-old female child to intentionally kill her baby by aborting it, but that it is wrong for society's adults to collectively execute a serial killer. The battle is right vs. wrong, moral vs. amoral, good vs. evil, capitalist vs. socialist, etc. Conservatism is turning the tide against the dark side and liberals are understandably upset that they cannot win elections.
The Sun editorial stated that Samuel Alito could become the "swing vote on many of the critical issues facing our nation -- including religious freedom, abortion, affirmative action and the death penalty" -- and I pray that he will.
