State regulators working to get police off riverboats

INDIANAPOLIS -- State regulators are working to get state police troopers off riverboat casinos and back to traditional patrols, and new gaming commission agents will perform their old duties.

New legislation passed this year by the General Assembly allows the change.

"If we are able to get 100 well-trained officers back to what I consider more important law enforcement work, I think that's a big plus for the citizens of the state," Gov. Mitch Daniels said.

About 120 state police officers work either on the boats or doing investigations and background checks for the Indiana Gaming Commission. Under the new system, the gaming commission will have its own staff of agents.

The salaries and benefits of the troopers top $6.8 million annually, according to the Legislative Services Agency.
