Letter: Censorship is subjective

This is in regard to your May 22 editorial about a child gaining access to pornography in a local library. I oppose any restrictions in the library regarding any material that is available. Censorship, like pornography, is subjective and all judgments are suspect.

The grandmother in your editorial did not read the rating on the DVD the child checked out, which was contained in a small space on the back cover. But if the rating is not obvious, adults should ask a library employee. Looking at the pretty cover art just does not fulfill the responsibility of a parent or guardian.

Some adults view the public libraries as free day care. Children are either dropped off for several hours or left to run wild while the guardian ignores them.

Libraries are not intended to be safe places to "store" children. And, manners should not be left at the door. If I were queen, children would only be allowed on the library property when accompanied by an adult.

Parents need to be parents. Just like voting, if you don't participate in the process, you should not be allowed to complain.
