Holiday closings

Three years after the Civil War ended, Confederate mourners decorated the graves of Confederate soldiers with flags. That practice, which began on May 30, 1868, soon spread northward. Originally called Decoration Day, the remembrance later become known as Memorial Day. It was observed on May 30 until 1971, when the federal holiday was switched to the last Monday in May. Here's what is open and closed on Monday:

SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.

UTILITIES: Closed: Sprint, Southwest Gas, Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Cox Communications cable television.

GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.

SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County public schools, Community College of Southern Nevada, UNLV, Nevada State College.

MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: United Parcel Service, U.S. Postal Service.

NEWSPAPER: Sun published jointly with Review-Journal and delivered in the morning. Sun offices closed.

TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Ride natural gas buses: Holiday schedule (one vehicle in operation). Citizens Area Transit: Buses on holiday/weekend schedule (fewer buses on fixed routes).

LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District, North Las Vegas District, Boulder City District.

GARBAGE: Republic Services of Southern Nevada pickups as usual.

MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing midnight Monday.

FINANCIAL: Closed: Most banks (state law allows banks to open on holidays as long as they post all transactions to the next regular business day).
