Congressional art winners selected

Three Southern Nevada students have been chosen as winners of an annual congressional art contest sponsored by Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev.

The artists attend schools located in Nevada's 1st Congressional District.

First place went to Stephanie Roybal, a junior at Palo Verde High School. Second place was 10th grader Joanne Bernardo, also from Palo Verde, and third place was to junior Ryan Sigler, who attends the Las Vegas Academy.

Framing cost for the pieces were donated by Sprint. Airline tickets were donated by Southwest for the winner and two family members to travel to Washington, D.C., in June for a reception honoring their achievement.

A three-judge panel reviewed a total of 68 submissions from Las Vegas students for the Congressional Districts High School Art Competition. Students could submit original paintings, drawings, collages, prints, photos, computer generated art and mixed media.

The work of the first place winner will be displayed in the halls of Congress for one year. The second place selection will hang in Berkley's Washington office and third place will be on display in Berkley's Las Vegas office.
