Proposed casino remains in discussion stage

Monday, May 23, 2005 | 9:05 a.m.

Backers of a proposed casino project here say it could be built in less than a year if it can get government approval. But that could take a long time.

Prospective casino partners Ken Davis and Guy Useldinger met with Gov. John Hoeven last week in Bismarck. Davis is chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, and Useldinger is co-owner of the south Grand Forks land on which the tribe wants to build.

"This (process) will go in spurts, things will take a long time, but once approvals are made ... this casino will be built and operational within six to eight months," said Robert J. Hajek, a Minneapolis attorney who is working on the casino project.

Hajek is representing the Useldinger family, three brothers who have pledged to help the Turtle Mountain tribe build a casino in Grand Forks.

"Everything is in place (for construction)," he said.

The proposal, however, is opposed by other tribes, and state officials say it is illegal.
