Letter: Owen supported by Texas voters, lawyers’ group

WEEKEND EDITION
May 21 - 22, 2005
Priscilla Owen has served on the Texas Supreme Court since 1994. She has been nominated by President Bush to become a federal judge for the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. The American Bar Association has rated her "well qualified," which is its highest rating. She is strongly for interpreting the law as it is, as opposed to making the law as it is not.
Yet, because she holds to conservative values, she has been labeled by liberals as being "out of the mainstream." Obviously, the majority of the people of Texas did not think she was out of the mainstream, for they voted for her!
Her law record is phenomenal, and her education earned her cum laude honors at the top of her class. She knows the law and interprets the law adequately and sufficiently. Isn't this among the top requirements for choosing a candidate? Owen appears to be an excellent candidate by the people and for the people, as she certainly was voted in "by the people" and "for the people."
