Columnist Ralph Siraco: Remember big payoffs at Derby
Friday, May 20, 2005 | 10:18 a.m.
Ralph Siraco's horse racing column appears Monday and his Southern California selections run Tuesday-Sunday.
As a fan, it is always tough to pick against the popular horse.
As a handicapper it is not.
Sometimes the two mesh for a single statement. Sometimes it clouds the process.
As a player, I will again look for value and let the racing gods decide about fate. I, again, will suggest a $1 superfecta box, looking for a value payoff.
The correct superfecta in the Derby paid a record $864,253.50 for the $1 bet. Although that is a life-changing score, the principal is the same. Go for value.
Therefore we will take a five-horse box costing $120 for the $1 increment.
$1 Superfecta Box:
No. 2 High Fly
No. 3 Noble Causeway
No. 9 Wilko
No. 12 Afleet Alex
No. 13 Giacomo
In no particular order -- except in the first four finishers, of course.
Have a great Preakness.
