Letter: Error may stifle honest reporting
Wednesday, May 18, 2005 | 9:35 a.m.
Poor Newsweek magazine! How could it have known that a small bit about flushing a Quran down the toilet would cause so much trouble that their Deep Throat sources would choke? Torture at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere has been pretty well documented, not to mention our policy of outsourcing torture. But now it is Newsweek that is the bad guy.
The chilling effects of the White House and Pentagon's pressure on Newsweek just add to the reluctance of the media to be anything but a propaganda organ of the government.
As it is, one would believe from media reports that President George Bush did not pressure the CIA on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, that we are winning the war, that Uzbekistan is a wonderful country and that the United States would never condone torture, especially by flushing a Quran down the toilet.
