Woman gets 3 to 12 years in DUI death

Tuesday, May 17, 2005 | 9:41 a.m.

A 29-year-old Henderson driver whose car struck and killed a 40-year-old bicyclist on Green Valley Parkway last year was sentenced to three to 12 years in prison on Monday.

Nicole Cowans previously pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence resulting in death for the May 11, 2004, crash that killed Jessie Marie Hinson.

Police said Cowans was driving with a revoked license, a suspended registration and her car did not have insurance when Hinson was hit.

Hinson was riding her bicycle northbound on Green Valley Parkway just north of Windmill Lane about 4 a.m. when she was struck from behind by a red 2000 Hyundai driven by Cowans.

Cowans originally faced felony charges of driving under the influence resulting in death and also involuntary manslaughter.
