Rebels gain at-large bid, play Fullerton

UNLV (43-17) will travel west for a Friday matchup against Cal State Fullerton on the campus of the No. 7 seed UCLA Bruins in the first round of the 64-team NCAA tournament.

Loyola Marymount rounds out the foursome and drew UCLA in its first game. The winner of the double-elimination regional will advance to a three-game Super Regional next weekend.

The at-large bid gives UNLV its eighth postseason berth in the softball program's history. In a seven-year span ranging from 1990-1996, the Rebels amassed a 16-16 record in the NCAA Tournament.

Currently, the 2005 Rebels hold the third-best winning record in the program's history. The 43 wins trail only the 1991 and '95 seasons, both of which won 49 games en route to finishes in Oklahoma City.

The Hamburg event is a major clay-court warm-up for the French Open, which starts May 23.

Tommy Haas topped Vincent Spadea 6-2, 6-4 and Nicolas Kiefer beat Jeff Morrison 6-2, 6-2. But the Americans got one point in doubles when Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan defeated Haas and Alexander Waske 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Glazer gains full control of Man U

Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer took complete control of Manchester United today by increasing his stake in the world's richest soccer club to more than 75 percent.

With 75 percent, Glazer can place his personal debt on United's books and take the club off the stock exchange and into private ownership.

The NFL, which usually frowns upon cross-ownership, isn't sure if its rules would prevent Glazer from owning a foreign club. -- Sun wire services
