Weather kind to Sunrise golfers
Wednesday, May 11, 2005 | 9:37 a.m.
When the first four golfers in the Sunrise Region championship teed off, they got something totally unexpected -- no wind, or any other weather. The forecast called for gusty winds and even some showers throughout the day, but Rhodes Ranch Golf Club saw none of that.
However, as expected, Green Valley and Coronado competed for the regional title throughout the day. They were the favorites in the region and they showed why.
After nine holes of golf, Green Valley led Coronado by five strokes. In the end the Gators were able to hang onto their lead and win the Sunrise Region, edging Coronado 376 to 380. Las Vegas High came in a distant third, shooting 411.
"Our fifth and sixth guys stepped up for us today," Green Valley coach Greg Murphy said. Jason Hicks shot a 78 and Tate Guild shot a 75 to help the Gators to victory.
The fifth and sixth guys had to step up because the Gators' third best golfer, Judson Meatovich, shot a 10-over 82. His score did not count because he finished sixth on the team and only the top five scores are taken.
Both the Gators and the Cougars will get a chance at the state title next week in Sparks.
Even though his team did not win the region, Darren Michels from Coronado shot the round of his life, a 4-under-par to earnthe Sunrise Region medalist honors.
"It feels pretty good," Michels said. "A lot of practice finally paid off."
Michels said it was his best-ever 18-hole round. He only missed one green, hit 14 of 14 fairways and did not have to three-putt.
Darius Estrada, from Green Valley, was second in the tournament at 1-under. Estrada was 1-under going into the back nine and stayed there until the end.
Chris Baden of Coronado finished third with a 73. Kyle Tickner from Foothill shot a 74 and finished fourth. Matt Nolasco, also shot a 74, finished fifth.
"At least I get the chance," Nolasco said about getting to compete in the state tournament. "I am going to enjoy it." Nolasco is the only player from Desert Pines who gets to go to the tournament.
Las Vegas sends two players to the state championship with Brette Maynard shooting a 74 and Brad Thompson a 78. Silverado's Daniel Lee will also get to make the trip after shooting a 77.
