Seven Nevadans get national honor

The Commission of Presidential Scholars at the U.S. Education Department recently announced the selection of seven outstanding Nevada students, including two Southern Nevadans, as semifinalists for the 2005 Presidential Scholars Program.

The Nevada semifinals are: Sneha N. Parikh of Henderson, a student at Green Valley High School; Alexander M. Solomon of Las Vegas, a student at The Meadows School; Andrew T. Ball, Wooster High in Reno; Molly J. Carr, a home school student from Reno; Jordan A. Hosmer-Henner, McQueen High School of Reno; Audrey E. Pak, Reno High School, and Quincy L. Sweeney of Sparks, a student at Reed High.

The Presidential Scholars Program was established to recognize some of the nations most distinguished graduating high school seniors. From nearly 2.8 million graduating high school seniors, approximately 2,700 students were identified as candidates for the awards based on their performance on the College Board SAT or ACT tests.

Liv Hoversten of Las Vegas

was recognized for academic achievement at St. Olaf College's annual Honors Day convocation on May 6. Hoversten is a first-year student at St. Olaf. Honors Day recognizes St. Olaf students who have achieved a grade-point average of 3.3 or higher.

California Lutheran University valedictorian,

Gregory Allen of Henderson, a business major and soccer player, was honored as scholar athlete for his excellence in athletics and academics during the Honors Day Convocation ceremonies on April 29.

Students qualify for the honor society by maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.9 on a 4.0 scale.
