Pirates’ Craig Wilson out

Tuesday, May 10, 2005 | 9:12 a.m.

SUN WIRE REPORTS

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Craig Wilson had surgery this morning on an injured left finger and is expected to be out of the lineup about two months.

Wilson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, two days after he tore the tissue from the knuckle of his left middle finger while hitting a double in the Pirates' loss to Arizona on Friday. He sat out of the team's 3-1 victory Saturday night and returned home Sunday to be evaluated by a hand specialist.

General manager Dave Littlefield said the team would have a better idea of when Wilson can return after the surgery.

In a news release, the team said officers will be present at the stadium beginning Friday.

Dempster warmed up in the ninth inning of Carlos Zambrano's five-hit, 2-1 win over Philadelphia on Sunday, and Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Dempster was taking over from the struggling Hawkins.

Chicago's bullpen was 4-9 with a 4.23 ERA and four blown saves entering Monday's game, and Hawkins blew three of seven save opportunities.
