Letter: Set trash pickups on seasonal cycle

I agree with Eugene Goldstein, whose April 28 letter criticized Republic Services' proposal to pick up trash just once a week instead of twice a week. He pointed out that trash picked up only once a week would begin to smell, and he was right, particularly this time of year. One realizes, within one summer season of residency in the desert, that trash needs to be picked up regularly for sanitation and health benefits.
During colder seasons, however, trash pickup just once each week could suffice. That being the case, why not have a rotation of services based on the time change?
Each spring we could not only be reminded of the need to replace our fire alarm batteries, but we could also be reminded that trash pickup begins twice each week until the time change occurs in the fall. Seems pretty reasonable and cost effective.
