Regents vote on Rogers’ contract

University regents were expected to approve a $23,660 contract this afternoon to make Interim Chancellor Jim Rogers the permanent chief executive officer of the University and Community College System of Nevada.

Today is Rogers' one-year anniversary of being named to the interim position. He beat out six other candidates in a national search for the position, including the State University of New York's outgoing chancellor Robert King.

Many regents on the search committee said Rogers was a "proven commodity."

Rogers' contract, which pays him the minimum amount allowed by law, commits him to three years of service through June 30, 2008. It allows either the chancellor or the Board of Regents to terminate the contract without cause with 30 days' notice. It also binds Rogers to the same disciplinary procedures he recently required for all of the presidents.

The contract also requires Rogers, the millionaire media mogul owner of Sunbelt Communications Co., to devote himself full-time to the position. The regents chairman must be notified of any planned absences of a full day or longer and any outside activity may not compete or go against the best wishes of the Board of Regents.
