Winds blow dust but cool weather

Winds at Lake Mead's Callville Bay gusted to 47 mph Monday evening as an energetic wave of weather brushed the northern end of the Las Vegas Valley and exited south and east, the National Weather Service said.

There were no reports of damage from the 25 mph to 35 mph winds that kicked up dust clouds in Las Vegas, Weather Service meteorologist Barry Pierce said.

A trace of rain fell from the passing storm clouds.

The thunderheads formed over Indian Springs, 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas, late Monday afternoon and then swept into the valley between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. As the clouds collapsed, wind stirred dust and pollen.

The highest wind gust reported at McCarran International Airport registered 36 mph. North Las Vegas gusts reached 40 mph to 45 mph.

Temperatures dropped six degrees after the storms passed, from a high of 84 degrees on Monday, Pierce said.

At 9 p.m. the valley's temperature registered 70 degrees because of cloud cover and more humidity in the air from the passing storms.

Temperatures were expected to warm to the high 80s today and Wednesday before another storm system moves into Southern Nevada Thursday through Friday, Pierce said.

Yet another storm system is expected to arrive on Sunday in time for Mother's Day, Pierce said.

The valley has yet to record a 90-degree high this year, Pierce said.
