Browns' Winslow hurt in motorcycle accident
Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident Sunday, but the team said his injuries aren't life-threatening.
Winslow was riding in a community college parking lot in Westlake, Ohio, when he hit a curb at about 35 mph and was thrown from the motorcycle, police Lt. Ray Arcuri said.
He was taken by ambulance to Fairview Hospital and was scheduled to be transferred today to the Cleveland Clinic where the team's medical staff would treat him, Browns spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz said.
"He went over the handlebars and was real evasive about what the injuries were," Arcuri said.
Winslow was wearing a helmet, but it wasn't strapped on and flew off his head, Arcuri said. He and four other men were riding motorcycles in the parking lot, not far from Winslow's home.
Consolidator out
Consolidator is out of Saturday's Kentucky Derby because of a fractured bone in his right front ankle. The San Felipe Stakes winner, Consolidator galloped Sunday and took some bad steps coming off the track, said trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
The withdrawal of Consolidator opens a spot in the anticipated 20-horse field for Illinois Derby winner Greeley's Galaxy. His owner B. Wayne Hughes will have to pay a $200,000 supplemental fee because the colt wasn't nominated to the Triple Crown series.
OU coach resigns
Longtime Oklahoma baseball coach Larry Cochell resigned Sunday, five days after using a racial slur during off-camera interviews with ESPN. A network spokesman said Friday that Cochell, who is white, used a slur after praising a freshman outfielder, who is black, during two pre-broadcast interviews Tuesday.
Roddick wins on clay
Andy Roddick looked strong on clay again, defeating Greg Rusedski 6-4, 6-2 today in the first round of the Italian Open at Rome. Roddick, who won the U.S. Men's Clay Court title in Houston over a week ago, became the top-seeded player in Rome after Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt withdrew from this important French Open tuneup.
