Democrats join opposition to gambling expansion

Thursday, March 31, 2005 | 9:49 a.m.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Key House Democrats on Wednesday denounced any expansion of gambling in Texas to pay for Texas' public school system, accusing the Republican leadership of advocating the measure behind closed doors and vowing that they would oppose the proposal if it comes up for a vote this session.

Democratic Rep. Jim Dunnam of Waco, flanked by three of his Democratic colleagues, said they would vote against gambling and appealed to the state's leadership to eliminate slot machines as a revenue-generating option.

Limited legalization of video slot machines has become one of the most contentious issues before the state Legislature this session. Lawmakers are looking for ways to generate enough money to cut property taxes and give public schools more money and big money lobbyists are pressuring them on both sides of the issue.
