Empty Bowl Benefit planned

The fifth annual Empty Bowl Benefit and Auction will be 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Green Valley High School, 460 Arroyo Grande Blvd., Henderson, to benefit food programs helping the poor and homeless of Southern Nevada.

A lunch of soup and bread will be served in handmade ceramic bowls. Each attendee will select their own unique ceramic bowl.

The event is sponsored by the Nevada Clay Guild and Green Valley High School.

Tickets are $12; $10 for children and may be purchased at the door.

Petapalooza set Saturday at Boyd

Petapalooza, the largest pet event in Nevada, will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Over 50 animal-related vendors and 25 animal nonprofit groups are expected to join the event. Hundreds of dogs and cats will be available for adoption at the event.

Lou Mack's Top Flight K-9 Frisbee Dog Team, as featured on "The Today Show" will return with a newly-expanded performance that includes a 65,000 gallon water tank for the performing dogs to jump. The event will also include musical entertainment, a full kids area, and multiple food and beverage vendors.

Admission is $2, which goes to the animal nonprofit organizations that participate in the event. Call 889-5129.

Mother nominations being accepted

Nominations are being accepted through April 11 for the 34th annual Clark County Mothers of Honor Awards, formerly called the Clark County Mother of the Year Awards.

To nominate a deserving woman, write a detailed letter listing her accomplishments regarding her children and family and her achievements in the community. Include any obstacles she has had to overcome.

Be sure to include your name, address and phone number as well as those of the woman you are nominating. Send the letter to: Clark County Mothers of Honor Awards Committee, C/O Candy S. Krausman, 6275 W. Patrick Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89118.

Since 1970, the awards committee has honored more than 300 women in categories including exemplary, inspirational, motivational, community service, education, business, military and others.

This year's awards will be presented May 1 at the Gold Coast.

Cardiac screenings will be performed free

for all Clark County residents between the ages of 14 and 40 from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the American Institute of Medical Sonography, 1050 E. Flamingo Road, Suite E329, in the main lobby. Call 369-4216.

Mike Glikbarg of Orchids of Los Osos

will be speaking at the Greater Las Vegas Orchid Society meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Nevada Garden Club Building in Lorenzi Park, Washington Avenue west of Rancho Drive. Glikbarg will talk about Odontoglossum and Oncicinae. Refreshments will be available. Call Eileen McKyton at 251-1456.

Community volunteers are needed

for a planting project 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Winchester Park, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Volunteers are invited to plant trees and shrubs around the park to create an Urban Forest setting in the 10-acre park. The park will become a site for instruction on tree planting and care, and groups of students will be given trees and instructed on how to plant them at their schools.

The Guns and Hoses

charity hockey game to benefit families of Nevada military personnel who were killed while serving in Iraq, will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Orleans. Tickets are $10; $5 for children 12 years of age and under. Call 229-0145.
