Vacation costs on the rise

Tuesday, March 29, 2005 | 9:32 a.m.

The price of lodging and dining in Nevada will increase by a combined average of 11 percent this year, well above the national average increase of 5 percent, according to a report from AAA Nevada.

A family of two adults and two children can expect to pay an average of $286 per day in Nevada for food and lodging, the travel service said. Lodging rates will average $147 per night, up 18 percent from last year. Meals will cost $139 per day, up 4.5 percent.

Rising prices aren't likely to hurt the state's tourism industry, AAA Nevada spokesman Sean Comey said. "Going on vacation may cost you more than last year but most people feel they deserve a break and consider it a good investment in maintaining their mental health," he said.

The least expensive vacations in the U.S. this year are in locations that "most people probably don't think of as tourist destinations," AAA of Nevada said. They were Nebraska, North Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa.

Nevada is a "relative bargain for in-demand destinations," ranking 10th in the survey. The most expensive state for vacationers remains Hawaii, at $518 per day in food and lodging costs.
