Chicken recalled for Listeria

A California-based company is recalling 12,500 pounds of chicken products from Trader Joe's grocery stores in Nevada and elsewhere because of fears of a Listeria contamination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday.

The only problem is that the recall may be coming too late to do any good.

Day-Lee Foods Inc., of Sante Fe Springs, Calif., distributed the "Trader Joe's, Teriyaki Chicken Wings & Drummettes" to Trader Joe stores in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington as well as in Nevada on Aug. 27, 2004.

The recall took so long to initiate because the test results for the chicken were delayed, said Mark Miller, recall coordinator for Day-Lee.

Trader Joe's headquarters has been informed, and store employees are instructed to pull any Teriyaki Chicken Wings & Drummettes with appropriate product codes from the shelves, Miller said.

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause high fever, severe headaches, nausea and can hurt unborn fetuses in pregnant women.
