Women's center will host yoga retreat

Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence will host a yoga retreat from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Reflection Bay, Lake Las Vegas.

The retreat will begin with Sherry Goldstein of the Yoga Sanctuary leading a 90-minute outdoor yoga session for all levels. Participants will then take a 15-minute walk to the gardens for a guided meditation, before walking back for lunch in the Rotunda Room.

Concert features 'River of Time'

UNLV faculty members Stephen Caplan and Juline Gilmore will join Amy Cofield of New York City as featured soloists in the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society's "Down a River of Time," a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in UNLV's Artemus Ham Concert Hall.

Cofield, a soprano, will be featured with the 60-voice Musical Arts Chorus and 32-piece orchestra in a performance of John Rutter's "Requiem" and will sing Mozart's "Exsultate Jubilate."

Tickets are $15; $12 for seniors, disabled, and military; $5 for students with ID. Call 895-2787.

Erik Aliana and Korongo Jam

will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Admission is $12; $10 in advance. Call 229-6211.

Project Challenge seeks applicants

Nevada Project Challenge, a residential youth at-risk program co-sponsored by the National Guard and the state, is currently seeking male and female applicants 16-18 years of age for its class beginning in July.

The program, which includes a five-month residential project conducted in a military environment followed by one-year of post-residential mentoring, focuses on developing discipline and responsibility to provide graduates the basic educational and social skills needed for success. There is no cost or military obligation to students or families who enroll in Project Challenge.

student Katrina Cunningham of Las Vegas, who is pursuing an associate degree in fashion merchandising from the College of Business at the North Miami Campus has been named to the Dean's List for the 2004-2005 winter term ending in February.

Awards

Mothers of Honor nominees sought

Nominations are being sought for the 34th annual Clark County Mothers of Honor Awards, formerly called Clark County Mother of the Year Awards.

The deadline to submit nominations is April 11. The awards will be presented May 1 at the Gold Coast.

To nominate a deserving woman, write a detailed letter listing her accomplishments with regard to her children and family and her achievements in the community. Include any obstacles she has had to face.

Be sure to include your name, address and phone number, as well as those of the woman being nominated.

Girl, 11, wins poster contest

Lia Yateman, 11, of Henderson won first place in her age group for her "Safety-on-the-Job" poster during the American Society of Safety Engineers' third annual kids poster contest.

She will receive a savings bond, a spot on the North American Occupational Safety and Health Week 2005 poster as well as having her poster displayed at the Labor Department in Washington, D.C., in May.

The Public Hero awards

to honor individuals whose contributions help to promote public health in the community will be presented at 8 a.m. Thursday in the Clemens Room at the Ravenholt Public Health Center, 625 Shadow Lane. Honorees include John Monze, Jim Shadrick ad Brad Burns.
