Letter: Retain, expand state’s helmet law

Tuesday, March 22, 2005 | 9:10 a.m.

I would like to applaud Brian Greenspun for writing the March 13 "Where I Stand" column on keeping a motorcycle helmet law in Nevada.

Not only did Greenspun make several good points about the common sense of wearing helmets, but he managed to include a reminder about why we are still feeling the loss of our beloved Gov. Mike O'Callaghan. It is heartening to know that O'Callaghan's son Tim has taken the reins in many areas to fill the void he left behind.

As for some of the letters from people responding to Greenspun's column: Wearing a helmet isn't meant to punish motorcycle riders -- it's meant to keep them alive in a crash. No amount of education is going to save their lives if an errant motorist fails to yield the right-of-way, but just possibly a helmet would.

I think we should be looking to expand the helmet law to cover scooters, mo-peds and bicycles for the very reasons that I think the law should be kept alive for motorcycle riders.
