Letter: Crucial issues are being ignored

Tuesday, March 22, 2005 | 9:09 a.m.

Congress can't get its act together to do something about the health care crisis, the Medicare crisis, the Social Security problems or a reasonable energy policy -- but it can make the time to get involved in a private matter (the unfortunate Schiavo case).

What happened to the Republicans who call for states' rights? Do they support states' rights only when it suits their purposes? What happened to the Republicans who argue for a smaller federal government? Do they make that argument only when it suits their purposes?

The involvement of the Congress is guided solely by a religious philosophy. For this President Bush comes back from the ranch. But what about all the other important issues he ignored while at the ranch?

Our country is supposed to be a democracy, not a theocracy.
