Revered dancer Glover taps UNLV for show
Friday, March 18, 2005 | 8:53 a.m.
He's tap danced to hip-hop, jazz, Vivaldi and Bach.
He created a tap revival with his Tony Award-winning choreography in "Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk" and Gregory Hines referred to him as "The greatest tap dancer to ever lace up a pair of Capezios or any other tap shoes."
On Monday, Savion Glover will improvise to jazz, hip-hop, R&B, rock and funk at UNLV's Artemus Ham Hall backed by a six-piece band. He'll also perform numbers from his show "Improvography."
Making his Broadway debut in 1984 at 12 in "The Tap Dance Kid," Glover's career includes performances in the 1989 film "Tap" with the late Gregory Hines, Glover's mentor, in Broadway's "Black and Blue" and in "Jelly's Last Jam," also with Hines.
Glover has also worked with the Count Basie Orchestra, Spike Lee and Hank Williams Jr. In a more recent show, "Classical Savion," Glover was performing to classical music and paying tribute to the late Hines.
Tickets for Monday's 8 p.m. show are $35, $45 and $70. For more information, call 895-2787.
