Geihs named Cheyenne High principal

Cheyenne High School has a new principal: Jeff Geihs, who served three years as the campus assistant principal before leaving last year for a central office post.

Geihs replaces Ronan Mathew, who was moved to take over Canyon Springs High School, also in the northeast region. Mathew in turn replaced Roger Gonzalez, the first principal of Canyon Springs, who took a central office post in human resources earlier this year.

Marcia Irvin, northeast region superintendent, said Geihs went through the same process as all the applicants for the position. Geihs had been working in Irvin's office as an administrative assistant.

"He knows the school, he knows the students, he knows the parents," Irvin said of the decision to appoint Geihs as principal. "He was the right choice for the community at this time."

Geihs could not immediately be reached for comment.

Canyon Springs has been under public scrutiny since the reassignment of first-year teacher Ron Turner, whose Black History Month play sparked a public free-speech debate. Some black community activists have shown up at two successive Clark County School Board meetings to protest the cancellation of Turner's play, which school officials said contained racial epithets, and the teacher's reassignment to an alternative education high school for students with behavioral problems.
