Columnist Susan Snyder: Hogs saloon raises bar at auditions

My mother is going to send another e-mail accusing me of clearing out my fax file, but here is a job description you don't see every day:

"Looking for Daisy Duke-meets-the biker chick-meets-the girl next door. A little leather, a little denim and a little lace. If you've got it, flaunt it. You ain't gonna have it forever."

If I ever had it, I'm not sure where I left it. But if you know what, and possess, whatever "it" is, the Hogs & Heifers Saloon wants you to audition for its new Third Street location to open in downtown Las Vegas in April.

Auditions open with mandatory interviews from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. March 25. Actual auditions begin at 11:30 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Interviews and auditions will be done at the Third Street Stage at the Fremont Street Experience, which is between the Four Queens and Fitzgeralds.

Applicants must be at least 21 and have identification (driver's license, passport, etc.), be prepared to dance and should wear jeans, halter tops and boots or sturdy shoes. No sandals, high heels or platform shoes.

In short, they don't want to see your toes. They will be looking at, or for, other attributes:

"Looking for loud, brassy, brazen, bold, sassy, gutsy, aggressive, charming, enthusiastic female bartenders," the notice says.

Might want to bring a thesaurus, too.

If your kid's teacher is as good as gold, it might be worth $2,000 to him or her.

The Recycle for Teachers program is looking for five Las Vegas Valley teachers to host telephone book recycling drives at their schools. Each of the five teachers chosen to participate will receive a $2,000 grant from R.H. Donnelley, publisher of the "Sprint Yellow Pages," to spend on supplies and other classroom needs.

Parents and pupils may nominate teachers until April 21 by logging onto www.fhdforteachers.com. Selections will be random.

The search is on for Nevada's outstanding older worker.

Experience Works, a national training and employment agency, is conducting its eighth annual campaign to recognize one worker from each state who is 65 years or older and works for pay at least 20 hours a week. From these state winners, it will choose America's Oldest Worker.

Nomination deadline is May 31. Obtain nomination forms by sending a request to Prime Time Awards, care of Shirley Chantrill, Nevada Division for Aging Services, 850 Elm St., Elko, Nev., 89801. Or call (775) 738-1966. Or nominate someone online at www.experienceworks.org.

Each state's honoree must be able and willing to travel to Washingon, D.C., the week of Sept. 26 for the awards events.

Gredia Grecia Alejar, an 80-year-old Las Vegas woman, was Nevada's 2004 recipient of the honor for her work as a human resources specialist for First Choice Home Health Care.

Kudos to members of Summerlin's Jewish Friendship Club, whose February production of "One More Time" raised more than $4,000 for Nathan Adelson Hospice.

The club is to award the donation during a ceremony this evening.
