Editorial: More than a statue

Nevadans have another reason now to travel to the Capitol in Washington -- to see the statue of Sarah Winnemucca. Each state is allowed to display two statues of its most notable citizens in the Capitol. A statue of former Nevada Sen. Pat McCarran has been on display since 1960. Winnemucca's portrayal arrived just this month -- but it's been well worth the wait.

Winnemucca was a Northern Paiute who lived from 1844 to 1891. She was an educator of Paiute children, an author, an interpreter and lecturer. Most memorably, she was a woman of peace who opened an earnest dialogue with the U.S. government. She bridged the white and Native American cultures for one reason -- to fight for better treatment of the Paiutes in Nevada.

She needed a lot of qualities to fulfill her life's work, among them intellect, bravery, hardiness, tolerance and determination -- qualities that we are proud to have represent us in Washington.
