Fishing report: Weekend surprises yield plump stripers

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

LAKE MEAD: Surprisingly good fishing for striped bass was found over the weekend in the Overton Arm while the action has been fair for boaters fishing for stripers in the Boulder Basin.

Creel census clerks saw a number of plump stripers weighing about 2 pounds caught by boaters at Fire and Ann Marguret coves over the weekend. Anglers were drifting with anchovies.

Three-pound stripers were caught from shore to the right of the houseboat dock at Echo Bay Marina early this week. Anchovies are taking those fish as well.

There is still enough action for stripers in Las Vegas Wash to keep boaters heading to that area of the lake. Drifting and chumming with anchovies has been the preferred method for taking the fish. Fishing has been very slow elsewhere in the Boulder Basin for both shore anglers and boaters.

Boaters fishing for largemouth bass over the weekend caught a few at St. Thomas in the Overton Arm. Otherwise, there has been little success for bass during the past week.

Fair success has been found for rainbow trout following NDOW's plants. The next stocking was scheduled for today at Hemenway, Horsepower, North Saddle and Pumphouse coves.

LAKE MOHAVE: The 50 anglers who were on hand for last Friday's rainbow trout stocking at Willow Beach had good success for planters, some of which weighed up to 7 pounds. Several anglers reported catching limits of 10 fish. Various spinners, spoons and PowerBait were used to catch the fish.

The next Willow Beach plant was planned for today when NDOW will stock more than 3,000 fish that will be around 9 inches in length.

Striped bass fishing has been very slow throughout the lake. There were no reports of big fish being caught following the trout plant at Willow Beach. Reports from Cottonwood Cove are the same.

NDOW will be stocking rainbow trout today at Cottonwood and Placer coves.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Dan Maes, NDOW area technician, said that generally mild weather punctuated by breezy conditions made for sporadic fishing. The highs were in the mid 50s with lows dipping into the 20s continued to keep the reservoirs free of ice.

Maes said that fishing pressure over the past weekend was very high and anglers enjoyed good success for rainbow trout that ranged from 12 to 17 inches with the majority of the fish measuring 14 inches. Power Bait and live worms were landing the fish.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Four anglers fishing from a boat reported that fishing was very slow but they were able to land a few stocker size rainbow trout. The fish were taken with live worms. Water clarity has improved, but it is still a little murky.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Ben Johnson from Nevada State Parks said that despite the fact that water levels are at a 10-year high, fishing has been fair. Anglers were catching a few rainbow trout that ranged 10-12 inches. Power Bait and night crawlers were the baits of choice.

URBAN PONDS: Stocking of rainbow trout is scheduled for March 18 in ponds at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. This will be the last trout plant scheduled in the ponds until the fall. Channel catfish will be stocked in the summer.
