Police say man abandoned 82-year-old mother at casino

GARY, Ind. -- A Chicago man left his 82-year-old mother sitting in a wheelchair for more than 15 hours at the entrance to a casino while he gambled inside, authorities said.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Andrew Hawkins Jr., but he had not been apprehended as of Wednesday afternoon, state police said.
Hawkins was charged with neglect of a dependent and faces up to three years in prison if convicted of the charges, said Diane Poulton, a spokeswoman for the Lake County prosecutor's office.
The woman, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital where she was treated for a broken hip.
"She complained that her left knee and hip hurt her because she had fallen at her house a couple of weeks ago," state Trooper Diana Miller said. "She stated that her son did not take her to the doctor because he was afraid that she might not come back."
