College preparation to be discussed
Registration for the program "Get on the Road to College," an evening of discussions to encourage early preparation for post-secondary education, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.
Topics include academic preparation that effectively begins in fifth or sixth grade and continues through middle and high school.
Clark County School District counselor Tamara White will lead the discussion, and Janice Wright, a deputy state treasurer, will discuss various methods of paying tuition, including the UPromise College Fund, Nevada Prepaid Tuition Plan and Millennium Scholarships.
Peggy Marlow and Linda Marks from UNLV's Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach will lead the family support segment. Call 799-6830, Ext. 1-1-4322.
Women business owners set awards
The Southern Nevada Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners will hold its seventh annual Women of Distinction Awards Saturday at the Rio.
The event recognizes distinguished women in the Southern Nevada community who have been selected by their peers from well-established professional and civic organizations in Nevada.
The awards are divided into business categories, with this year's honorees representing the following professions: accounting, gaming, community service, philanthropy, convention services, construction/development, minority women, communications, entrepreneurs, education, banking, legal, real estate, and medical.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Women's Development Center, whose goal is to end the cycle of poverty by helping women and families reach complete self-sufficiency.
Those receiving awards are Diane Conant, Kathy Maynor, Maria Letizia, Valerie Moon, Louise Helton, Jeanne Richard Jones, Carol Carter and District Judge Sally Loehrer.
The Nevada Chamber Symphony
will present its fourth performance of the orchestra's annual concert series "Music with the Classic Touch" 3 p.m. Sunday in the theater of the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. Admission is free. Call 433-9280.
The Clark County Nevada Genealogical Society
and the Paseo Verde Library will present researching military records as part of the Gardening Your Roots: A Genealogy Series, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, Henderson. Register at the library or by calling 492-6593.
Singer and saxophonist Curtis Stigers
will perform 7 p.m. Saturday at Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Admission is $12; $10 in advance. Call 229-6211.
