Letter: Goodman is wonderful role model for kids
Tuesday, March 8, 2005 | 9:09 a.m.
I'm sick and tired of hearing people complain about how Mayor Oscar Goodman's comments concerning his love of gin will corrupt the minds of our children. Yes, it might be considered controversial to make these comments in front of an audience of fourth graders. But let's not be hypocrites -- we all live in Las Vegas.
As a concerned father raising my own children here in Las Vegas, I am well aware of the many parental obstacles I must overcome. I am, however, proud of where I live, and I accept complete and total responsibility for my parental duties. Isn't it our responsibility as parents to talk to our kids, and address the difficult issues that face us as Las Vegas parents?
If it wasn't for alcohol, this city would be nothing more than a pile of tumbleweeds. Our recent success as a city has everything to do with going back to our roots and focusing on liquor, gaming, sex and having a good time! "Disneyland style" theme parks and pirate shows catering to the kiddies are a thing of the past.
While for some people, alcohol can be a road to destruction, for others it can help build a beautiful city, maybe even the fastest-growing city in the United States, and provide jobs for thousands and thousands of people. Goodman is a successful lawyer, a successful father and one of our country's most successful mayors. He can speak to my kids anytime. He is a great role model, and I'm proud to have him represent me as my mayor.
