Additional cabs OK’d
Thursday, March 3, 2005 | 10:52 a.m.
The Nevada Taxicab Authority has approved additional taxis on the city's streets for the NASCAR race and a convention scheduled later this month.
Temporary medallions have been authorized for Clark County's 16 cab companies March 11-14, the weekend that thousands of people are expected to attend the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 NASCAR race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and March 15-20 for the ConExpo/Con-Agg convention and trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The five-member Taxicab Authority approved an additional 10 cabs per company during various time periods over the race weekend and 15 cabs per company between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m., on race day, with a special geographical restriction encouraging pickups at the speedway.
For the convention, the board approved eight additional cabs per company at various times between March 15-19 and five additional cabs on March 20.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority expects 135,000 people to attend ConExpo/Con-Agg, a construction equipment show that occurs once every three years and what may be the largest trade show hosted by the city in 2005.
