Lottery ticket sales on hold while new equipment installed

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Colorado Lottery will suspend sales for one day this spring to install new machines that verify winning tickets.

Under a state contract worth $43.5 million, New York-based Scientific Games will take over management of lottery machines in 2,500 stores across Colorado beginning May 2. Ticket sales will be suspended May 1 to put the new equipment in place.

The start date has been delayed twice by Scientific Games, which has paid almost $1.5 million in contract penalties.

"We wanted to make sure that the system was ready to go," said Nolan Jones, who is overseeing the equipment change for the Colorado Department of Revenue. "We took advantage of the fact that we had two opportunities to make sure that this thing is as transparent as possible."
