Letter: Wild horses are national treasure

I read with interest the article in Sunday's Las Vegas Sun about the plight of our wild horses. The article told of how Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., slipped an amendment in the federal budget bill that gives the Bureau of Land Management the right to sell the horses. Thousands of the horses could be sold to slaughterhouses.

Are we as a people now so money hungry that we are going to start selling our national treasures?

I suggest we ask one of the Native American nations to care for our horses. They have the decency and respect for nature to do the job right. Another option would be to have some of the horses assigned to federal prisons. In managing the horses, inmates could learn about respecting life.
