Letter: U.S. Foreign Legion is needed
Thursday, June 30, 2005 | 8:53 a.m.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are using up our military. National Guard units and reservists have been all been called up. What's left?
If we want to continue our warlike stance, and bring democracy to the world, then clearly more troops will be needed. A draft perhaps, or maybe another idea that has been floated -- an American Foreign Legion, organized like the French Foreign Legion.
France has had this military outfit for more than a century. It's the first of their units in when there is a problem. Legionnaires are highly trained in all methods of warfare, and at the conclusion of their five-year enlistments become French citizens.
Why not use the drive of our many illegal immigrants and have them enlist in our Foreign Legion, They would be well trained, learn the language and at the conclusion of their enlistment would be legal citizens.
Or we could still turn to the draft.
