Men who allegedly tried to rob poker champ pleads not guilty

Tuesday, June 28, 2005 | 9:40 a.m.

Two men charged with attempting to rob 2004 World Series of Poker Champion Greg Raymer pleaded not guilty on Monday.

Kevin Joy, 36, and Deen Cassim, 32, are scheduled to stand trial before District Judge Joseph Bonaventure on Sept. 12.

Joy and Cassim are charged with burglary while in possession of a firearm, attempted robbery with use of a deadly weapon, attempt to commit first-degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping and conspiracy to commit robbery both with use of a deadly weapon.

Prosecutors allege the men staked out Raymer and attempted to rob him of $150,000 in poker chips as he was entering his room on the 20th floor of the Bellagio on Dec. 20.

The 330-pound Raymer, however, said he was able to fend off the 240-pound Joy and short and slight Cassim who ultimately fled the hotel after security guards manning the floor heard Raymer's screaming.

Deputy District Attorney Linda Lewis said if Joy and Cassim are convicted on all charges they will face up to 60 years in prison.

Both men remain in the Clark County Detention Center in lieu of $250,000 bail.
