Bill Canning

Bill Canning, 69, of Henderson died Saturday in a local hospital. He was born July 21, 1935, in Boston. A resident for five years, he was a retired technical writer and a Korean War Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn S.; one daughter, Kellie Canning of Long Beach, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Stacy Howell of Woodland Hills, Calif.; and one brother, James Canning of Boston.

Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., is handling arrangements.

The family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society, 1325 E. Harmon Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89119.

Julia Anna Halliwell

Julia Anna Halliwell, 89, of North Las Vegas died June 6 in a local care center. She was born Dec. 3, 1915, in Sandy, Utah. A resident for many years, she was a nurse and homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Robert of DeKalb, Texas; one daughter, Dora Margaret Melendez of North Las Vegas; one brother, Richard Pedersen of Coquille, Ore.; one sister, Mary Dellinger of Springfield, Ore.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, 1111 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling private arrangements.

Shirley A. Laub and Stanley R. Laub

Las Vegas residents Shirley A. Laub, 62, died Saturday and her husband Stanley R. Laub, 66, died Wednesday.

An office assistant for Clark County, Shirley was born March 12, 1943, in Abilene, Texas, and was a 49-year resident.

A retired railroad mechanic and a Navy veteran, Stanley was born May 7, 1939, in St. George, Utah, and was a 65-year resident.

They are survived by three daughters, Cindy R. Conn of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Kathy R. Laub of Las Vegas and Barbara E. Pickering of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, Phillip A. Laub of Las Vegas and Steve M. Laub of Henderson; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Shirley is also survived by her mother, Christine Warren, and one sister, Beverly Newby, both of Whitewater, Colo.; and one brother, Jerry Warren of Harrison, Ark.

Stanley is also survived by one sister, Patricia Stevens of Caliente.

Visitation is scheduled one hour prior to an 11 a.m. service Friday in the Christy and Kell Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A private graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, is handling arrangements.

Barbara A. LaVoise

Barbara A. LaVoise, 64, of Las Vegas died Friday in Las Vegas. She was born July 7, 1940, in California. A resident for eight years, she was a retired payroll clerk.

She is survived by two sons, Joseph LaVoise and Tom LaVoise; two daughters, Donna M. McNitt and Karen A. Berardi; three brothers, Fr. Gerald Walker, James Walker and Larry Walker; one sister, Callie Walker; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service date is pending. Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, 1111 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.

Nonato Guatengco Marquez

Nonato Guatengco Marquez, 69, of Las Vegas died Thursday in Las Vegas. He was born Aug. 31, 1935, in Manila, Philippines. A resident for three years, he was a retired cook.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ison Marquez; two sons, Alex Marquez of Manila and Bernard Marquez of Las Vegas; three daughters, Charette Rodrin of Manila, Juliet Sato of Hammamatsu, Japan, and Cordeth Consing of Las Vegas; one brother, Romy Marquez of Manila; and 14 grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with a 6 p.m. rosary Wednesday in Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd. Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Catholic Church, 7260 W. Sahara Ave.

Drucella Pedroza

Drucella Pedroza, 65, of Henderson died Thursday in a local care center. She was born Aug. 28, 1939, in El Rito, N.M. A resident for 18 years, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Louis; two sons, Michael Pedroza and James Pedroza, both of Henderson; two sisters, Margaret Lucero and Angela Ortiz, both of El Rito; six brothers, Peter Trujillo of Chamita, N.M., Eloy Trujillo of Garden Grove, Calif., Robert Trujillo and Mario Trujillo, both of El Rito, Ray Trujillo of Albuquerque and Andrew Trujillo of Taos, N.M.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 3-7 p.m. Monday with a 6 p.m. rosary in Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter's Catholic Church, 204 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Park, Henderson.

Betty Dux Slade

Betty Dux Slade, 65, of Las Vegas died Saturday in Las Vegas. She was born Nov. 8, 1939, in Buffalo, N.Y. A resident for 10 years, she was a retired administrative assistant in the machine tool industry.

She is survived by her husband, Ron; two sons, Scott Slade of Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Chris Slade of Buffalo, N.Y.; one daughter, Holly Bommer of Buffalo; two brothers, Richard Dux of Buffalo and Frank Dux of Palm Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 2-7 p.m. Tuesday in Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Catholic Church, 7260 W. Sahara Ave.

Michael H. Smaw

Michael H. Smaw, 24, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. He was born Jan. 6, 1981, in Taequ, South Korea. A resident for 15 years, he was a cook for a fast food restaurant.

He is survived by his parents, Dwight and Chong Smaw, and one brother, Damon J. Smaw, all of Las Vegas; and his grandmother, Shirley Smaw of Pennsylvania.

Visitation is scheduled 2 p.m. until a 5 p.m. service Wednesday in Thomas and Jones Funeral Home, 310 Foremaster Lane. Burial will be private.

Cathie Sobero

Cathie Sobero, 24, of Henderson died Thursday in Las Vegas. She was born Dec. 25, 1980, in Irvine, Calif. A resident for nine years, she was a retail sales clerk.

She is survived by one daughter, Layla Chyle; her father, Jorge Sobero; her mother and stepfather, Liliana and Jerry Anderson; two brothers, George Sobero and Mitchell Anderson; her grandmother, Esther Gallo; and her grandfather, Raul Sobero.

Willard L. Stewart

Willard L. Stewart, 87, of Henderson died Friday in Henderson. He was born May 18, 1918, in Alamo. A resident for 58 years, he was a retired operating engineer in the construction industry and a World War II Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen; two daughters, Kathryn Lamb of Kanarraville, Utah, and Mesia Neilsen of Henderson; two sons, Kendal Stewart of Las Vegas and William Thomas Stewart III of Henderson; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled one hour prior to an 11 a.m. service Thursday in the Mission Drive building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Alamo Cemetery, Alamo. Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, is handling arrangements.

Lawrence J. 'Larry' Tolemy

Lawrence J. "Larry" Tolemy, 73, of Las Vegas died Friday in Las Vegas. He was born March 3, 1932, in Chicago. A resident for 10 years, he was a retired American Airlines facility maintenance employee and a Korean War Army veteran.

He is survived by his companion, Maureen Masta of Las Vegas; two sons, Lawrence J. Tolemy and Kenneth Tolemy, both of Chicago; one daughter, Diana Potenpa of Las Vegas; two sisters, Mary Ann Ganney of Wisconsin and Lorraine Fedjelem of Illinois; one brother, Pete Tolemy of Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Vickers

Kenneth Vickers, 69, of Las Vegas died June 13 in Las Vegas. He was born Dec. 20, 1935, in Alabama. A resident for 44 years, he was a hotel pit boss.

He is survived by one son, Timothy Vickers of Las Vegas; one daughter, Miesha Gipson of Texas; two brothers, Augusta Vickers and Williams Vickers, both of Chicago; three sisters, Anna R. Whitlow of North Las Vegas, Evonne Nick of Chicago and Versa Harris of Alabama; and three grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 2-7 p.m. Tuesday in Thomas and Jones Funeral Home, 310 Foremaster Lane. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Carver Missionary Baptist Church, 1221 N. J St. Graveside services will follow in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City.
