Senator to push bill to restrict Indian casinos

Federal legislation that would restrict Indian tribes from moving around in search of a reservation casino site will be pushed by U.S. Sen. David Vitter.

Vitter, R-La., said his bill will mirror legislation filed last month by U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., which would tighten the conditions under which a tribe can get involved in casino gambling. The bill would require approval from local governments, the state legislature and the governor.

The legislation comes as the Jena Band of Choctaws attempts to open a casino in Grant Parish in central Louisiana. The tribe, which has yet to establish an official reservation, earlier lost bids to put a casino at two other sites in Louisiana.
