Court rules against Vegas company

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- The Nevada Supreme Court has stopped a Las Vegas company from proceeding in its suit against the operator of a racetrack in Boise, Idaho in a contract dispute.

The court Wednesday said Nevada courts have no jurisdiction over Lariat Productions, Inc., that runs the racetrack.

Roberts Communications Network, based in Las Vegas, had a contract with the prior owner of the racetrack to provide "real-time information about common pool wagering at horse tracks across the nation."

Lariat, when it purchased the track, continued to receive the information but never signed a continued contract with Roberts Communications. The Idaho company then sought another provider despite the fact the four-year contract had not expired.

Roberts sued. Lariat then petitioned District Judge Kenneth Cory to stop the suit on grounds the court did not have jurisdiction over the Idaho corporation. Cory rejected the Lariat petition.

But the Supreme Court said Lariat has no significant ties to Nevada and it issued a writ of mandamus stopping the suit from going forward.
