Ordinance to register garage sales killed

A proposed ordinance that would require Las Vegas residents to register their garage and yard sales was killed Wednesday, but is expected to return in the near future.

The council voted 7-0 on Wednesday to strike the proposed ordinance after City Councilman Michael Mack suggested the council delay action on the ordinance for 30 days. However, procedural rules prevented the council from holding the ordinance for that long.

Councilman Gary Reese said he would reintroduce the matter later.

Mayor Oscar Goodman said he was philosophically against the proposed ordinance because it represented more government involvement in residents' lives.

Residents are already limited to holding two garage or yard sales a year. But city officials said they have a hard time ensuring that limit is adhered to without a good way to track who is having yard/garage sales and when.

The twice-a-year limit, which has been in place for at least 10 years, is intended to prevent residents from running small businesses disguised as frequent yard sales.
