Networking event set at UNLV

UNLV's William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration announced they will host a networking event 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday and Tuesday in the the new lounge at the International Gaming Institute in the Stan Fulton Building on the campus.

Attendees can network and socialize among hospitality professionals from all areas of the industry.

Additional events will be held Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 20 and Nov. 17.

Classes aid diabetes prevention

University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension presents the class "An Ounce of Prevention" 3-4 p.m. Wednesday at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive.

Community Based Instructor, Hermilia Uriba will instruct the classes designed to teach people ways to prevent type 2 diabetes. Hermilia will teach six classes for six consecutive weeks.

Screenings for seniors

Acacia Springs Active Senior Living presents "Life Line Screenings" for the senior community Thursday at Acacia Springs, 8630 W. Nevso Drive (one block south of the Durango/Flamingo intersection.

The screenings are used to access the risk of stroke, aortic aneurysm, Peripheral Arterial Disease and osteoporosis. A registered or registry-eligible ultrasound technologist will conduct the screenings, and once ready they are reviewed by a board certified physician to make certain the results are accurate before mailing to the individual screened.

Each individual screening requires 10 minutes or less to complete and costs $45. For a three-screening package the cost is $109, and for all four screenings, the cost is $129. To register, call (800) 643-6075.

Schools shifting summer hours

Beginning Monday, the Clark County School District will shift to its early morning hours with the start of the 2005 Summer Energy Conversation Program.

At schools on a nine-month calendar, staff will work from 4 a.m.-12:30 p.m. from June 13 through Aug. 12 to avoid using electricity during the peak hours between 1-7 p.m. The adjusted summer schedule is expected to help the school district avoid about $2.7 million in electricity costs. Home equity seminar planned

A free seminar on understanding home equity conversion mortgages will begin 10 a.m. June 23 in the multipurpose room at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Participants will learn about reverse mortgages, who can qualify, what are the benefits and costs, how to avoid predatory lending, and where to get free counseling. Call 366-2100.

'Life and Living' forum scheduled

The forum "Life and Living, Dying and Death" will begin 7 p.m. June 23 at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. Rabbi Yocheved Mintz, Father Kevin McAullife of Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and Dr.Stuart Stein, Medical Director of Nathan Adelson Hospice, will explore issues, consider alternatives and offer insight on daunting personal issues related to death and dying. 'Tip a Cop' fundraiser set

"Tip-A-Cop," a special Olympics fundraiser will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. June 24 at Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, 7860 W. Tropical Parkway and 2575 S. Decatur Blvd.

Local law enforcement will trade in their handcuffs and badges for serving aprons at Redd Robin collecting tips to benefit Special Olympics Nevada.

Credit couseling class offered

"Making Ends Meet and Dreams Come True," a free credit counseling class that will begin at 6 p.m. June 27 by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service in its Conference Center, 2650 S. Jones Blvd.

Participants will learn methods to organize spending, reduce debt, build and maintain a good credit history without making costly or hazardous mistakes.
