Aide pleads not guilty in ex-husband’s drowning

A certified personal care aide pleaded not guilty to charges on Tuesday that she killed her quadriplegic ex-husband by drowning him in the bathtub.

Twenty-five-year-old Gloria Guzman was arrested on March 11 after she allegedly admitted to detectives that she intentionally drowned 40-year-old Mark Richards on Feb. 26.

Guzman is scheduled to stand trial Aug. 15 before District Judge Michael Cherry.

Cherry scheduled a bail hearing for June 24 at which time he will hear testimony and decide whether he will lower Guzman's $500,000 bail.

Guzman was allegedly angry with Richards because he planned to move into his own assisted living apartment, and that move would have deprived her of the income she received for taking care of him, according to the police report.

Prosecutors have said a background check on Guzman shows no criminal history.
