Splash Box Derby is scheduled

The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services Aquatics Unit offers families the opportunity to build their own boats to parade and race in the second annual Splash Box Derby scheduled for Saturday at the Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive. Entrants will check in at 5 p.m. with the parade beginning at 5:30 p.m. and races starting at 6:15 p.m. Food, beverages and commemorative photos will be available for purchase. The $7 registration fee per floating creation includes admission for a family of up to four. The public is welcome to attend the event and watch the competitions. Spectators will be charged $1 for admission. There will be on-site registration. Online registration can be done at www.lasvegasparksandrec.com.

The race categories are "Single Sailor with Tugboat" (one child in a boat with adult providing forward motion), "Two Swabbies" (two children in a boat using hands or paddles for forward motion), and "Full Crew" (family of four in a boat using hands or paddles for forward motion). All entries will compete for the Admiral's Choice Award.

Slide presentation on desert tortoise

A free slide presentation on adopting a desert tortoise will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Nevada State Museum in Lorenzi Park, 3333 Washington Ave. The slide show will be informative. Refreshments will be served.

Movie Madness Series presented

As part of North Las Vegas' fourth Movie Madness Series, the movie "Daddy Day Care" will be show at dusk Saturday at Nature Discovery Park, I-215 at Simmons St.

Babies to benefit from fund-raising

Nevada's Talent of the Year Award, a brand new statewide fund-raising competition, is raising money to prevent and save the lives of abandoned babies, abused and neglected children in Nevada. Nevada's Talent of the Year Award is currently searching for the person in Nevada with the most unique and original talent. Children up to the ages of 18 can compete. Talents includes: puppeteers, symphony orchestra, self defense gurus, cheer leaders, costume characters and much more.

The event will be noon-5 p.m. Saturday in the West Las Vegas Library Theatre, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

Military salute set at mall

The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada will hold its Salute to Those Who Serve event 6-9 p.m. June 25 at the Fashion Show Mall. RSVP by Friday.

The event honors outstanding members of the military and the ARC Chapter volunteers. Program proceeds will benefit the Red Cross' Armed Forces Emergency Services and local Disaster Services.
