Police seek suspect in shooting death
Monday, June 13, 2005 | 9:51 a.m.
Metro Police are looking for a gunman who killed a man and wounded a bystander about 11:40 p.m. Sunday in front of a convenience store across the street from the Boulevard mall.
The shooting at 3507 S. Maryland Parkway, near Sierra Vista Drive, apparently was the culmination of a series of events that started at a fraternity party at UNLV, Metro Police said.
After the party, Metro received a series of reports about shots being fired and fights in the 3900 block of Cambridge Street and the 1000 block Lisbon Street, which is close to the homicide scene. While officers were investigating the call on Lisbon, they heard the fatal shots, police said.
Sgt. Ken Hefner said it appears the victim, Gary Lee Lavoll, 28, was the intended target, and the person who was wounded had no connection to the shooter or the other victim.
Lavoll was taken to Sunrise Hospital where he died.
The wounded person was shot in the lower leg and was hospitalized for the non-life-threatening injury, police said.
Witnesses told police the gunman was a skinny black man who appeared to be 19 to 25 years old, is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds. They said he has a bald or shaved head and possibly a small goatee. He was wearing a large, black T-shirt, black pants and black shoes.
Anyone with information about the shooting can call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or Metro at 229-3521.
