Action deferred on Waterloo request for dog racing

Monday, June 13, 2005 | 9:26 a.m.

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Supporters of a gambling operation at the closed Waterloo Greyhound Park want state gambling regulators to reopen the park to racing nine years after it was shut down.

The National Cattle Congress, owner of the track, was denied a license last month for a proposed riverboat casino.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission instead approved a casino license for Isle of Capris Casinos to build a $118 million complex adjacent to an existing Waterloo water park.

Attorney Dave Nagle, representing the track owners, said dog racing can be profitable if it includes pari-mutuel betting and simulcasts of races from other tracks. He said the track has no current plans to add slot machines.
