Coroner’s jury to rule on officer shooting

A Clark County coroner's inquest jury is expected to determine today whether a Metro Police officer was justified in shooting a 24-year-old man who allegedly beat him with his own baton.

Officer Robert Chamberlin killed Leopoldo Tijerina Jr. on May 15 outside the Liborio Market near Lamb Boulevard and Washington Avenue.

Police were called to the market when Tijernia allegedly began threatening employees and patrons and trying to get into parked cars. He tried to run away when Chamberlin arrived.

Chamberlin used his Taser gun on Tijerina but it didn't subdue him, police said. Tijernia grabbed the weapon from him. Chamberlin then pulled out his baton, but Tijerina took the baton away from Chamberlin and began attacking him with it, police said.

Chamberlin shot Tijerina several times and he died at the scene.
