Money granted to fight Internet crimes against kids

Wednesday, June 8, 2005 | 8:46 a.m.

Clark County and Metro Police have been awarded $390,000 by the Justice Department to continue a program designed to investigate Internet crimes against children.

The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention grant will go to the county and police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program, or ICAC, which was created in 1998. There are 45 task forces nationwide, including the one in Clark County.

The local program received an initial $2.4 million grant to create state and local enforcement "cyber units" to investigate child sexual exploitation by offenders using the Internet.

"This program has been instrumental in the development of investigative expertise for the apprehension of individuals who are exploiting minors over the Internet," said U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden. "These grant monies assist with the sharing of information between agencies and enhance our ability to track down these sorts of offenders."

Between January 2000 and April 2005, 108 people have been charged with child pornography offenses in Nevada.
